Fear: A Healthy Emotion If Well Managed

J. Ibeh's book entitled FEAR is an incredible contribution towards understanding the human condition. He points out that fear is a normal reaction in life and that destructive reactions must be harnessed and turned into constructive responses that can lead to both improved coping as well as facilitating important life lessons. J. Ibeh also points out that throughout life we have options when faced with fear. This is truly a must read book!

- Sam Sterk, Ph.D., CC-AASP Sport Psychologist and Hypnotherapist; author of WIN! Get the Mental Edge Skills in Martial Arts

Mr. Agbanyim’s text on fear is an intriguingly different approach to the construct of fear that may shift the paradigms of thinking on the topic. While I hold strong opinions against viewing fear as a positive emotion, I believe you will find this text worth exploring. It has the potential to contribute
new imagination and information to the body of knowledge on fear.

—Lloyd C. Williams, Ph. D., Ph. D., D. Min., Organizational Psychologist, CEO, The Institute for Transformative Thought and Learning, LLC

Mr. Agbanyim's work uses the emotion of "fear", which usually can be a life destabilizing trait, and recharacterizes it for constructive purposes. His argument to use fear as a motivator to conquer the things that serve as an impediment to our lives is a unique and most positive approach to self improvement. His real world examples helped to easily illustrate his guiding points and his writing is clear and succinct. He writes, "Fear is nothing except a state of mind because it is possible that we see our circumstances the way we are and not the way circumstances are". This line cleanly sums up his thesis in a relatively few amount of words. Many have heard the command to "conquer your fears"; Mr. Agbanyim gives us a model to do just that.

—Garland H. Williams, PhD, COL (ret) Dean of Operations, Colleges of Humanities & Social Sciences, Vice President - Military RelationsUniversity of Phoenix

The author captures the very essence of being human, reinforcing the fact that there is always something that keeps even the emotionally strong, awake; obviously fear is one. How to manage fear varies from person to person in time and space; however, J. Ibeh has provided the relevant prescriptive tools for accomplishing that task. I strongly recommend this book to the many of us struggling to confront fear in all its manifestation, both known and unknown.

—Prof. Phyl Amadi

Mr. Agbanyim unveils a new perspective on the subject of fear and turns conventional wisdom on its head. That is exactly what he does when he argues that an emotion as “negative” as fear has creative purposes. For instance, if fear of failure is the impetus that drives us toward success, then we lose nothing by being afraid, according to Mr. Agbanyim. Readers will undoubtedly gain much valuable insights from the pages of this book and the simple but matter-of-fact nuggets of wisdom that it conveys.

—Professor Patience Akpan-Obong, PhD, Arizona State University

Mr. Agbanyim gave us a practical perspective on how to deal with one of the most difficult aspects of life—coping with fear. Fear can be an enemy and a stronghold that prevents us from attaining our individual goals or it can be a catalyst that strengthens us for future challenges. In reality, fear is not always a bad thing. God gave us the capacity to fear so we would not pet a tiger or fall off a tall building. As the author clearly states, fear becomes a negative in our lives when it prevents us from accomplishing personal objectives. The personal examples in this book help us to understand how an intangible like fear can be turned into tangible opportunities in your life. Take advantage of them.

—Edward D’Avola, faculty member, University of Phoenix

Having just celebrated thirty-five years with my wonderful wife, it was a joy to read the words of Mr. Agbanyim. Married at ages eighteen and nineteen, we faced fears that we had never imagined. With our faith in God and each other, we realized that we had a choice in how we could live our life together. We were fortunate early in our marriage to have the insight that Mr. Agbanyim describes in his book. Life
has been so good and will continue that way, because we took control of our fears, not our fears controlling us. Mr. Agbanyim, thank you for putting together a book that isstraightforward and can be read and understood by all ages.

If you allow destructive fear to rule your life, you will never experience wonderful opportunities available to you. In twelve years of coaching high school football, I persevered in teaching my athletes how to use constructive fear as a motivator—not only in sports but in their personal lives as well. Mr. Agbanyim has done a great work prescribing how to use destructive fear constructively.

—Thomas Parson, high school football coach

“My name is Wesley Miles. I am 31 years old and a member of the Gila Riva Indian Community. I read an article written by J. Ibeh Agbanyim and the article was about fear and the effects of power that it brings. What really caught my eye was the subject of constructive fear, and this type of fear can actually help push a person forward in that area of life. After reading it, I applied it to my life of getting back into shape and rediscovering my love for fitness and running. How I did this was planned my month of May and every day, while at work on my breaks and lunch, I did a-one mile run and a workout. Overtime, and with hard work, I got faster and stronger. The fear I had before was my health problems and depression that slowly affected me, but by using constructive fear, it helped me overcome the fear of failing. I am currently running 8 miles once a week and I have lost 10 pounds. I do intend to keep this habit and make it a lifestyle once again.”—Wesley Miles

The Power of Engagement: How to Find Balance in Work and Life

Th e Power of Engagement is powerful. Within the fi rst chapter I began to feel as though Mr. Agbanyim had studied my personal and professional relationships. His evaluations and assessments really struck a chord with me. Many of the relationship concerns he touches on in this book are more clearly illuminated for me through his perspective. I have already started using many of the techniques suggested in the book to more successfully work with my employees.

—Rob Drew/CEO – Drew Brothers Customs

I had the pleasure of reading Th e Power of Engagement on a recent trip. I was so impressed with its insights that I felt compelled to read it again…more closely. Th e Power of Engagement should be
used as a practical workplace guide for people who aspire to become managers. It will serve as a practical guide to help future managers better understand the situations they will be facing and how to
successfully navigate the work environment and be recognized as a true leader.

Th e Power of Engagement refl ects the trinity of purpose, embodied in thought process, spoken words and the execution of a deed. In other words, whenever what one is thinking diff ers from what one
is saying and doing, reality becomes a hostage; in such a situation, the unique bond in relationship be it at home or the workplace is weakened and ultimately broken. How to remain true to self under
every compelling circumstance is always a living struggle. Th is Book seems to have found the key, invariably unlocking answers to such prevailing challenges despite all the contradictions in one’s choices
and actions sustained.

— Professor Phyl U. Amadi, University of Phoenix, Arizona USA

Th e Power of Engagement: Engagement is first conceived in the laboratory of the mind— the mind is the most powerful tool along with positive attitude one has in his or her arsenal to move forward—
to commit and change life for the better. I will recommend The Power of Engagement to workplace and
personal life.

— Tanney Herlocher, friend and colleague/Industrial Psychology Professional

Th e practical, everyday anecdotes presented in Th e Power of Engagement bridge the gap between theory and work-life balance. It illustrates how one can plan and dream about the future and achieve goals while living a healthy lifestyle. Th e stories presented are indicative of people we all know and can relate to in our daily lives.
